History of Penang Airport
Penang Airport, formerly Bayan Lepas Airport, was completed in 1935 when Penang was still under the British colony of the Straits Settlements.
In the 1970s, a significant airport expansion occurred. During that time, a terminal building of Minangkabau architecture was built. The runway extended to accommodate Boeing 747s, the largest passenger jet aircraft. The airport was renamed Penang International Airport after completing the expansion works in 1979.
In recent years, the said landing field became a source of conflict between the Malaysian federal government and the Penang state government. The main factor of the disagreement was about the country's transportation system, which is under the latter authority's control and management.
There have been calls encouraging the Penang state government to expand the airport. Despite this, it was essentially disregarded by the country's federal government, even though the facility has already exceeded its maximum capacity of more than 6 million passengers.
In 2017, authorities announced the intention to develop the airport, aiming to accommodate 12 million passengers annually by 2029. The airport expansion project was delayed from 2020-2022 due to funding and land acquisition issues. However, the Transport Ministry of Malaysia has reaffirmed its development plans for airport expansion.
