Penang International Airport Train Transfers
Trains are one of the swiftest ways to get to your destination, especially for long-distance and inter-city trips.
Unfortunately, Penang International Airport is not accessible by train. However, it has a nearby railway station located about 27km from the airport property, the Butterworth Railway Station.
As the railway swing bridge over the Perai River had opened, the Butterworth Railway Station also began operating in 1967. It allowed the rail line, which had terminated at Perai before, to resume serving Butterworth.
Before extending the railway network to Butterworth, Perai was the former starting point of all rail services. It is also where ferries to Penang Island depart.
Prai and Bukit Mertajam railway lines were opened in July 1899. Upon completing most sections in the West Coast Line, trains were permitted to run from Prai to Seremban in 1903 and Johor Bahru in 1909.
In 1918, the railway network to Padang Besar was completed, allowing the first International Express to operate between Prai and Bangkok's Thonburi Train Station.
On August 5, 2011, the old Butterworth station building was officially closed and demolished. It was replaced with a temporary station about 30m away, next to the KTM Bhd (KTMB) parcel office.
A new Butterworth railway station was built as part of the Electric Double Tracking Project.
Butterworth Railway Station is a Malaysian train terminal located and named after the town of Butterworth in Penang. The Keretapi Tanah Melayu Electric Train Service (KTM ETS) serves the station. It is an inter-city rail passenger service operated using electric multiple-unit (EMU) trains.
The KTM ETS is the second electric train service operated by the Malaysian railway company, next to the KTM Komuter service. It is also the second inter-city rail service after KTM Intercity.
Komuter Northern Sector trains, one of the five KTM Komuter services, is run by Malaysian rail operator Keretapi Tanah Melayu.
This railway station connects Penang to Kuala Lumpur and Penang to Gemas. The mentioned areas are the meeting point and railway junction linking the West Coast Line (Padang Besar–Singapore) and Penang - Padang Besar, the border town of Malaysia, the northernmost station of the west coastline connecting the State Railway of Thailand.
The station is also linked via covered pedestrian walkways, the Penang Sentral, and the Sultan Abdul Hamid Ferry Terminal for a ferry ride to Penang Island.
